It’s no secret that smoking would damage the health of the lungs. Previous research also revealed that people who have the habit of smoking usually consume less fruit and vegetables than people who do not smoke. Knowing this, researchers assume that smokers benefit shortage of vegetables and fruits so that their lungs are not getting healthier.
Furthermore, the researchers then wanted to find out if supplements can help change and vegetables to maintain healthy smokers their lung. The results showed that the sump and vegetable supplements can indeed help improve respiratory function in heavy smokers. These results were published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, as reported by Science Daily (27/06).
Researchers observed 75 heavy smokers who fit the criteria of their health and lifestyle. The participants were then divided into three groups and asked to consume capsules containing powdered vegetables and fruits twice a day.
One group was given capsules containing powdered fruits and vegetables, the second group was given the same capsule coupled with mixed berries, while the control group was given a placebo. All participants were then observed for three months and blood tests were taken.
After the study period, it was found that the group taking supplements of fruits and vegetables, and berries showed an increase in respiratory function is, cardiovascular health factors, and folate status. Fruit and vegetable powder capsules apparently proved beneficial for heavy smokers.
Researchers also found a reduction in the risk of health complications associated with smoking habits in participants. However, these results did not then provide an opportunity for smokers to continue smoking and feel healthy by taking supplements of fruits and vegetables. Further research remains to be done to determine the overall effect of these supplements.
